Healing isn't a straight line

There's no timeline you're supposed to be on, and no "right" way to feel. This page covers what's common, offers a grounding tool for hard moments, and points toward longer-term support.

Common, not concerning

What you might be feeling

These reactions are common trauma responses — not signs that something is wrong with you, and not a fixed list you're required to match.

Numbness

Feeling detached, flat, or like it happened to someone else.

Anxiety

Racing thoughts, a constant sense of alertness, or trouble feeling safe.

Intrusive memories

Flashbacks or thoughts that resurface without warning.

Sleep changes

Trouble falling asleep, nightmares, or sleeping far more than usual.

Anger

Toward the person who hurt you, the situation, or seemingly nothing at all.

Guilt or shame

Even knowing it wasn't your fault, the feeling can linger — that's common too.

Changes in appetite

Eating much more or much less than usual for a while.

Feeling nothing at all

Some survivors expect a dramatic reaction and instead feel strangely calm — that's normal too.

Right now

A grounding exercise for hard moments

Box breathing — four seconds in, four seconds held, four seconds out, four seconds held — can help ease a spike of anxiety or panic. Follow the circle for a few cycles.

Ready when you are

Box breathing

Sit or stand somewhere steady. Press begin, then let your breath follow the circle as it expands and holds. Stop anytime — there's no wrong way to do this.

Building support

You don't have to carry this alone

Trauma-informed therapists, survivor support groups, and rape crisis center counselors specialize in exactly this kind of healing. If cost or access is a barrier, hotline advocates often know local low-cost or sliding-scale options.

A note to hold onto

Self-compassion isn't optional

Whatever you're feeling today — numb, furious, fine, or all three before lunch — it's allowed. Healing tends to move in loops, not a straight line, and slower doesn't mean you're doing it wrong.
